Boot from USB issue

Basic rundown on my situation: I am fairly new to linux and am trying to set up dual boot on an already set up Windows 7 box. I installed BT4 on a USB and it works fine booting from it on my laptop (dell inspiron 1525, running vista).

I have gone into BIOS and set boot order as
1. USB-ZIP
2. USB-FDD
3. USB-CD-rom
4. HDD

Basically when I boot up with the pen drive installed it goes to:
Verifying DMI pool data...............update successful
(long pause)
boot error


and that is it. I can get more specs on the actual box soon as I'm guessing they are needed to help, but does anyone have any idea why it works fine on the one machine and not on the other? (probably a silly noob question but I couln't find a similar problem while searching)

Hey, I had a similar issue (a long time ago) with my desktop PC booting off a USB flash drive. My BIOS has pretty much the same options as the 4 that you have identified, in relation to booting USB devices.
But to boot off a USB flash drive I have to change the 'Hard Disk Boot Priority' which are options available to choose which hard disk to boot from (obviously!). If your USB flash drive is plugged in, it should show up in the hard disk priority menu. Select the flash drive, and move it to the top of the menu.. and hey presto!
