any knows what to do with this error "ioctl siocsiwmode failed network is down" ?

i have alfa 500mw N , chipset RT2870 and driver rt2500 ( as seen on iwconfig and airmon-ng)

when i try to start airodumop i get the following error
"ioctl siocsiwmode failed network is down"
Could anyone confirm its not working on bt 4 pre or do i have a damanged card ?
sometimes after i second try to use airodum it will work , but will show very few networks .. if any ..

a driver problem ? physical problem ? thanks in advance

When did you purchase your card? Some v1 cards were flaky, they released a v2 hardware around Sept/Nov.

by the looks of ebay i've purchased it at 23/07, got it around the end of august
if that is the case , how can i check for it ? and is there a firmware upgrade or am i Screwed ?

Look for the model number on the device, there may also be a fcc id number on it as well that you can use.
You can also try the device in another OS like windows or Ubuntu.
It may work there. Try using a tool like lsusb to gather information.
