How to get atheros cards to work in bt4

Hello Everyone!

This is my first tutorial so bare with me. I feel I need to give back to the community!

First off: airdriver-ng (madwifi) driver won't install because the source moved so here is what to do!

1. download and extract the
Latest Release:
MadWifi v0.9.4

2. Open the extracted file called: madwifi (in a console type)

cd /root/madwifi (or wherever the location of the file is on your computer)

3. Once in the directory type: make

4. After everything has compiled type: make install

5: Next open up a console and type: modprobe ath_pci

6: Next in a console type: ifconfig ath0 up

7: Type: ifconfig and make sure ath0 is listed.

8: finally open up your Wicd manager and under preferences make sure your card is now ath0.

(Thats it! Enjoy your atheros card!)

NOTE: If you have a built in card and all the steps above are completed successfully and it still does not work to please push the button on your laptop to activate the wifi)

I am assuming that you are running a fresh BT4 Pre Final
Which is weird, because I only just did a fresh install and tried to compile the driver but I run into heaps (and I mean heaps) of build errors.

Did you specify something else? A specific compiler?
If you know what might be going on I can put the log up?

If everything is cool you should be able to inject on the built in kernel drivers..

airmon-ng wlan*

Should create a new device node called 'mon0'.

True I should be able to, but the card isn't even recognized under ath0 or anything anymore.
Had madwifi in bt3 and injecting was fine, did a fresh install to bt4 pre and now poof, no more ath0 and no more working drivers.

I'm hoping to find a decent set of compiler settings to get this damn thing built so I can start going again.

Is it an external or internal card ? do you have wlan0 ? If your card is not recognized post the model and any relevant information to the non working hardware section.

There are madwifi-ng drivers in the repository, no need to go all the way out just to manually compile a vanilla madwifi-ng driver.

As for ath5k I've personally have been seeing issues with running it in monitor mode, such as weird AP names showing up as if they are there when they aren't. This was mostly prevalent in bt4b and with bt4pf the strength of rfmon was substantially weak in ath5k compared to madwifi-ng.. don't ask me why. The latest kernel in bt4pf repo doesn't seem to address the issue either.

Yea ath5k driver is still very buggy and really doesn't run the card to its full potential Best stick with the madwifi drivers until it becomes a bit more stable.

1. download the madwifi-drivers-4032-bt1.deb file.

2. Then install the file:

dpkg -i madwifi-drivers-4032-bt1.deb

3. Then reboot
