You have to be root or sudo the command. Try
$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid Fitzcorraldo key s:monkeycheeze
I have searched google, this forum, and linuxquestions, so sorry to bug but I don't know where to turn.
I have no trouble using the aircrack-ng suite with my card, but when I attempt to connect to my access point I run into this problem:
I get that error whether I have the device up or down through ifconfig.Code:$ iwconfig wlan0 essid Fitzcorraldo key s:monkeycheeze Error for wireless request "set ESSID" (8B1a) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
lsusb gives me the device like so:
Do I have a driver problem? Any ideas?Code:Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2f73 Ralink Technology, corp. RT2501USB Wireless Adapter
Thank you, problem solved.
Now I'm wondering about the difference between the "root" bt4p-r boots to (non-gui), and the root level access sudo delivers.
It seems like I am allowed to do some root tasks from the booted login, but this one didn't work until I sudo'd it. For example, I can rm -rf /bin/ and my home directory seems to be root.
Is it possible to explain whats going on here, link me to an article on the larger subject, or give me some phrases to look up, because I'm not finding it on google "root vs sudo."
