Default Total novice, Thanx for the help.

Im very excited to learn of backtrack and its pen-testing tools, in one package, but as stated Im a complete novice. I am trying to use backtrack 3 (for stability) but I guess I'm so new to linux systems that I can not connect to the internet. I am useing the flashdrive version, for flexiblilty (8g)

The schools computer has a static IP, and I can not find the section of the gui to enter the ip information. On a laptop I have had more success, I picked up the secure school networks useing wireless assist program.

Can somebody provide the command line information to connect?

Stolen from another forum. I searched "ifconfig static ip" in google and found this:

ifconfig is the command you want:
    Code:
ifconfig [device] [my.static.ip.addr] netmask [my.net.work.mask] up
    for example:
    Code:
    ifconfig eth0 10.1.7.13 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
Then if you want to see the current network configuration:
    Code:
    ifconfig
Also, please look at it's help file:
    Code:
    ifconfig --help
Most of the programs have a help file. You will learn more if you read them. Also, Google is one of your best friends in this as it will never flame you as I see here time and time again.
