Sorry, I tried this in noob-land and basicly got ignored, I did not want to bother you guys with something so trivial.

You definitely can, the first thing you must do is find out which partition contains the boot folder:

fdisk -l

It will list all hard-drives with its corresponding partitions. Usually the boot partition is small in size. Also do:

Code:

mount -a

to see everything that is currently mounted. After that you should have everything you need to mount the boot partition...

Code:

mount /dev/sdX /boot

where sdX is the device name that you got from fdisk! After you have mounted the partition, you can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst as you please and re-write GRUB to the MBR!!!

Well. I should have checked back here today before I tried again. I found it but in a terribly different direction.

I booted off the live usb with plans to manually cd over to it. When I tried to mount the hdd it could not be found. I then went into the gui and opened the partition manager which apon startup managed to mount the partitions on the drive. I was then able to navigate to it and edit it via kwrite.

You got me there in 5 seconds

Start > System Menu > Storage Media > "Happy Browsing !"

Hey thanks for the tutorial. I tried it for 2 days and finally got it working. I kept getting a Error 19: Linux kernel must be loaded before initrd, like someone else in the forum. I had to put the kernel line before the initrd line in the menu.lst like in the post.

Dumbest mistake I made was that I mispelled "kernal" in the menu.lst. I kept on typing "kernal" instead of "kernel". When the initrd line is before the kernel line the Error 19 appears and you get the same error when you misspell kernel. Hope this helps someone else with misspelling things.

but you should edit the first post, so that the kernel is loaded before initrd.

solved my problem with the busybox.
i had some stange root device (ghda) in my /boot/grub/menu.lst, due to a typing mistake...

Nice tutorial, worked first try ,-)

i ran into a problem well trying to install a old driver for my nvidia card, during the installation i got a incompatible kernal error witch i ignored... so, now backtrack4 wont boot... this should be a simple fix...

can i boot up from the live disk then replace the corrupted kernel? any one recommend a quick fix?

However, i do seem to be having some issues with this installation.

I am attempting to perform a quad-boot (windows seven, ubuntu studio 9.04, fedora 11 kde, and backtrack 4 pre final).

After 4 days of tinkering with this installation (a lot of trial and error!) i am about to get three out of the four operating systems working correctly from the grub boot loader.

Here is the installation order in which i was performing:
windows seven (was already on the hard drive)
fedora 11 kde
backtrack 4 pre final
ubuntu studio 9.04

Ubuntu Studio seems to be automatically picking up ubuntu 9.04 and fedora 11. I have added windows seven to the menu.lst and it works correctly.

Here is where the problem occurs:
What ever i seem to put in the menu.lst for backtrack, i seem to be getting a error 15 when attempting to boot!

Anyways, here is my information:
Partitions:
sda1 | Windows Seven (hd0,0)
--------sda2 - Extended (hd0,1)
sda9 | Backtrack /boot (hd0,2)
sda7 | Ubuntu / (hd0,3)

look, i think you made a mistake:

(hd0,2) is your boot partition, not your root partition. so you should change it to:
