That's correct. I confirm that I tried to change the Mini PCI Express WiFi card of a HP COMPAQ PRESARIO and halted at boot with a message of incompatible hardware.
You can modify the bios if you know how to do it and willing to take the risk of damaging your gear, but I wouldn't suggest it.
