Default vmware tools gzip error from patch

So I'm trying to follow instructions listed here

    hxxp://xxx.offensive-security.com/blog/backtrack/installing-backtrack-as-a-vmware-guest/

    Code:
    mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    mount /dev/cdrom3 /mnt/cdrom
    cp -rf /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-7.8.5-156735.tar.gz /tmp/
    cd /tmp/
    tar zxpf VMwareTools-7.8.5-156735.tar.gz
    wget xxx.offensive-security.com/tools/vmware-tools-patch-backtrack4-7.8.5-2_6_29.tar
    tar zxpf vmware-tools-patch-backtrack4-7.8.5-2_6_29.tar
    ./vmwaretools.sh
After I download the vmware patch and try to untar the file "tar zxpf vmware-tools-patch-backtrack4-7.8.5-2_6_29.tar" I get an error that it is not in gzip format...

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
    tar: Child returned status 1
tar: error exit delayed from previous errors
Can someone give me some help on what to do next?

opps, that obviously a mistake. drop the "z" in the tar command, should work just fine.
    Code:
    tar xpf vmware-tools-patch-backtrack4-7.8.5-2_6_29.tar
I did this last night, and worked like a charm. from there as the site you referenced says... just run "./vmwaretools.sh"
    'see the fnords!'
