No networking on eee pc 901

Hi guys, this is my first post here. As a rather newbie to linux world, I was so happy that BT team made a debian-based bactrack because I had difficulty to fdisk the netbook. So I installed BT4 pre-final from usb Live CD twice, but alas in both cases I could not get networking to run. It was working seamlessly under Gnome Ubuntu.

I read (sorry could not post url to eee forum!) that :

To start (wireless) network, after login ("root / toor") type in the two commands ("/etc/init.d/networking start" and "/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start"), then "startx" (for KDE), and through the green icon on the panel ("taskbar") choose your network.

I tried the commands above but got "No such device" response. The output of iwconfig is here. I appreciate if you have any clue:

lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
ra0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:""
Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:ɋ143 dBm

BTW, if I can work out the network, is it possible to remove KDE and have BT under Gnome?

First ensure the interface is up

ifconfig ra0 up

then check that your card see the outer space (networks in range)

iwlist ra0 scan

If you see one or more AP there, then everything is working.

Now you may

1.- Use wicd to connect to your network

2.- Use console commands. Do not use "iwconfig". Use instead "iwpriv" command for rt2860

All the info about how to setup wicd and iwpriv is here in the forum.

Yes, it is possible to remove kde and install gnome and there is a post about it. But you need to know what you are doing. Just dont do it.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I worked it out. Just for people who do not know what is wicd, and how to set it up (like myself a few minutes ago!) watch this great instruction video, specially the 'Setting up Wireless':

There is a thread here where you can voice your concerns/complaints etc to the admins'.
As has been stated before by our admin Re@lity, 15 posts before you can post a url is a little price to pay to help keep the forum free of spammers.
If you participate then this will take no time at all to over come.

BTW you can also do hxxp: in place of http: et cetera.
