When I was checking system>users and groups I noticed under preferences for the non-root account that connect to wireless and ethernet and use audio devices were unchecked by default, not sure if that's the problem, since i've just been running as root

    Solved Sound Problem on:
    - Alienware Area-51 m15x
    Soundkard:
    - Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 04)
    -Realtek ALC889A

Add the following line to the end of the file:
    /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

    options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3

after a reboot the sound works :-)

Default Dell inspiron 1525 no sound

I had no sound when I installed pre-final.
I am a noob so bear with me.

I did a lot of searching in different forums and finally found this to work.

    00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 02)

From the alsa website my controller isn't even supported. I tried adding the line in this thread to my alsa-base file and it didn't work

found in some ubuntu forum the line <options snd-hda-intel model=3stack>

    I added that to modprobe.d/alsa-base

I could then hear something when I went to settings-sound and multimedia-sound system and pushed test. Although the sound was really low.
So I opened up kmixer and turned all of the sliders on and all the way up. (master, headphones, pcm, front, surround, center, and lfe)

I now have sound. I learned some new commands and a little bit more about this platform. I would like to say thanks to all of you that have worked so hard on this project. Excellent job

While you are logged in as root edit user privileges for non-root user, and check "use audio devices". That fixed my big problem
    Thanks

did the sound work on a live cd?
Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious...
