hmmmm, as u see above I used macchanger, and it accepted it (using rt2800usb linux driver), and looking right now, I still have the same faked MAC (what I am getting at here = so far I still have the same faked MAC about 4-5mins after I "faked" it using macchanger)

- I have not tried with the "rt2800usb" driver, but only with "rt2870sta". (apocolipso)
- When I use macchanger shows the NEW mac correctly. (the card is in "down" mode)
- But when I recall in "UP" the interface with "ifconfig" command, is changed again with the default MAC.
- Today, I try to test with the rt2800usb driver.

I agree with you there, I too have had the strange errors, I thought it was me tho... fact being you've seen it too, makes me feel not as crazy now! heh.
I do want to say tho, I have ONLY seen the problem while using airmon-ng when setting the card into monitor (I have NOT ran into this issue using iw to set the card into monitor). also dmesg gets pretty ugly when those errors start occuring... I don't know the root reason tho for those problems... but indeed they do also occur on my X86 BT4beta install, it's not a common thing, but has happened to me two or 3 times since I started using these drivers. (my work around when using airmon-ng so far has been to always "airmon-ng stop mon0" + "airmon-ng stop wlan0" -- then I do the whole airmon-ng start wlan0, which then creates the mon0 interface... so far it hasn't failed me..... yet)

I kinda wonder (out loud, heh) if the macchanger issue might of had something to do with these programs running in background of the kubuntu x64 live cd session ::

That might be an issue, i never had problems changing the MAC on my HWUN2 (rt2870sta driver). Though i always issue the following
Code::-$ sudo airmon-ng stop wlan0 :-$ sudo macchanger --mac 00:11:22:33:44:55 wlan0 :-$ sudo airmon-ng start wlan0
Now i'm doing this with my broadcom pci wireless (also does the same on my broadcom notebook wireless) but when my rt2870sta was working it worked just the same, creating the mon0 interface (on all 3 chipsets) just fine

here's my latest update with the rt2800usb driver troubleshooting with BT4beta :
macchanger works with rt2800usb driver = I can change MAC addresses successfully and get out to the internet at large, without issue (of note, my router required that I use a VALID MAC address, using fake one's - or maybe just fake OID's? - did not work for me)
using "macchanger -A wlan0" did the job everytime (posted here is a log showing everything working fine after MAC address change to random valid vendor ID/MAC) ::
I wasn't so lucky with testing macchanger on kubuntu x64 live CD, but come the day slackware13 x64 gets released I will play around some more with a x64 capable OS! I was able to use NetworkManager working just fine with rt2800usb drivers + BT4beta - it's actually pretty slick GUI wireless tool for linux, if I don't say so myself (I hadn't messed with it at all until I saw Jano mention somewhere else? that it didn't work with rt2870sta) -- but wicd is my perferred wireless GUI

- I have installed and tested the drivers rt2800usb, and confirm that everything works, including Macchanger and Network-Manager (connected successfully with wep and wpa encryption)
- But I have not had time to compare the injection speed, between the driver rt2870sta and rt2800usb.
- I think that the drivers rt2x00 (rt2800usb) are for now the best solution.
