I had a 300baud modem for my C64. I connected to dozens of BBS's with it. I remember when the 14.4's came out and that was big time.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

The first piece of hardware I bought was a U.S. Robotics 56K external modem.
I still have the thing... somewhere.

I have a box of them that I saved from the throwaway pile when I was working for Uncle Sam.
In all large corporations, there is a pervasive fear that someone, somewhere is having fun with a computer on company time. Networks help alleviate that fear.
