I can not see my network using the built in network manager. Kismet can see it fine and so can airodump. The network manager sees my neighbors connections. My network is setup not to broadcast the the essid but if I turn that off it still doesn't see it. Switching from WPA to WEP security and it still can't see it. Turn all security off and I still can't see it. What do you guys think I am doing wrong?

Of course, if you really wanted to have some fun, go to Wal-Mart late at night and ask the greeter if they could help you find trashbags, roll of carpet, rope, quicklime, clorox and a shovel. See if they give you any strange looks. --Streaker69
Maybe Network Manager should removed completely, too many noobs try to use it and it doesnt work.

It works great as long as you properly set it, in my case one i run
i have to run /etc/init.d/networking start once more to get it to configure my wireless conections perfectly and start picking up APs.Code:/etc/init.d/networking start and then /etc/init.d/NetworkManager start

Optionally, you could install wicd and then disable NetworkManager. The wicd package automatically finds and displays access points in a newb-friendly manner.
Be sure to google 'wpa_supplicant Ubuntu' before trying to access a WPA AP with wicd.
