Possible persistent USB (removable hard drive?)

I am having serious trouble getting a persistent USB up and running. Probably because my 4 gig stick was a cheap ebay jobbie. Before i try what i was thinking, i thought it best to check here for support and possible downsides. I have a 250 gig external and wondered if it was possible for me to install Backtrack on that as persistent. I figure the answer is yes but i have 3 NTFS partitions on it and one of which is a live version of GParted and i'm not sure if that will conflict in booting Backtrack. Any help would be appreciated and also, if someone that has done this from a removable hard drive could let me know of any downsides that would be awesome

Use unetbootin to install it to the external, you may have to backup data and format one of the partitions on your external if there is no free space, unetbootin will set up the dual boot for you automatically.
Or try a live DVD, which is not easy to mess up.

I installed BT4 to external 500 gb hdd. I installed it there just like to any hdd, but at the last step of installation I selected that grub will be installed to that disk, not to compurers internal one.

Cheers. I could make another partition for Backtrack. As long as i can still have GParted on there and all my 200 gig of randomness, i'm happy. I wanted to check first as all my data on there is irreplaceable and didn't want to wipe anything. Thanks
