Time to dive into the murky waters of ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) troubleshooting:
The following links may help. The first link is from the (Unofficial) ALSA Wiki - its a little hard to follow but is a reasonable starting point. The second link is Ubuntu specific, but most of the information should be transferable and useful in giving you an overview of how ALSA works. The third link provides some command lines to use in collecting information about your sound setup to assist in troubleshooting.

You will likely have to do some more searching to find a solution once these pages give you enough information to start troubleshooting your problem...
Capitalisation is important. It's the difference between "Helping your brother Jack off a horse" and "Helping your brother jack off a horse".
The Forum Rules, Forum FAQ and the BackTrack Wiki... learn them, love them, live them.
do you have the correct drivers installed? Also I read somewhere that Backtrack 3 does that on XP to somepeople.
