how to access the web cam?

I want to pipe access to my mac's webcam through netcat to... well to where ever i want (e.g. business trip to another state). I don't even know where to start researching this. ANY info would be helpfull, like... can i find it in /dev?

Though my specific question is about a mac, any webcam on any linux system could help me figure this out.
