Why don't you try out BT3 instead?
Please Help me Install USB Wireless Driver
ZyDAS USB2.0 WLAN.
Brand name: Retail Plus.
I am using VMware Workstation with Backtrack 4.
Why don't you try out BT3 instead?
Well this thread format is wired; usually by default on other forums the original post always comes on top; I guess I have to go into my profile and edit some settings;
Okay so even Backtrack 3, I need help:
Where can I find the driver for my Wireless USB?
I will really appreciate any responses.
Thanks.
It seems as though you are really having a tough go at things.
First yes you can change the forum layout, it somewhere in your "user cp"
Two there are things called search engines on the internet.
Basically type a word or words into a box hit enter key or search , answers if found are given.
Exemplar one
Exemplar two
Exemplar three
Now before you go and start downloading everything you can find make sure the driver is the one for your chipset.

This is what I did:
I downloaded the "firmware" (also called driver?) from
then I went to /root/lib/firmware/zd1211 and pasted all files inside zd1211-firmware-1.4.tar.bz2;Code:h ttp://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=129083
Some files were overwritten. So that's it now? Is my driver supposed to be installed?
VMware disconnected my USB wireless from Host (Win XP) and then made it connect to Backtrack. But I still cannot see if it works.
Here are some screen shots:

You stated above in red that you "pasted all files..."
What does this mean exactly?
If by paste you took what you downloaded as is and simply pasted it into the folder like you would do in windows or whatever then no this will not work.
The file you have is a tar.bz2 as such it will require that it first be "untar'ed".
Normally
tar -xvf tarfile where tarfile is the name of the file itself
After doing this there is generally some sort of make routine or whatnot that needs to be followed. This can be found by cd'ing to the directory and looking for a make file, readme, or something similar.
This will normally tell you how to get the driver installed.
As for the pictures is seems as though you are trying to do things the gui way as opposed to the command line. I will tell you that it will be better if you use the command line for this sort of thing.
If you look at the second picture posted it shows you the actual error when you invoked the "network start" bit.
This means that the device ( your card) could not be found. This may or may not be a driver issue. Most likely it is.Code:eth0 ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Post back the actual commands that you used and the resulting output.

Before boot, I decided to use the third command which is listed after networking and startx.
"what does this button do?" (it formats the OS)
Anyways I have a different GUI now NOT KDE.
I tried to reboot the OS via VMware and then do startx but it still loads up in this "developer" GUI (bt4-crystal?).
I continued.
The .bz2 file was in the desktop/newfolder/tarfile.
I did not know how to navigate there in command line.
So I just Renamed the file and removed all the subfolders after root so the tar file is in the root folder (a shortcut to cut and paste? ).
I untar'ed as you described.
But now where do I put the extracted files? I can't find root/lib.

Any help to get me back into the KDE GUI would also be appreciated.
There are two ways to go about all of this.
One delete your virtual machine and start all over.
This will be easier but you will not learn much.
Two work through the problems and you will learn more.
I will give you pointers for the hard road, but you have to do the work.
This 3rd command of which you speak loads up the "crystal" desktop environment. KDE (startx) is the other one.
So for that there is a fix here on the forums.
Search hint/s "KDE does not start"
Syntax error, I do not understand. Moving onThe .bz2 file was in the desktop/newfolder/tarfile.
This is obvious, You should probably really learn some basics before messing with BT, Learn how to "move around in linux". Read the whole thing, not necessarily at once but complete.I did not know how to navigate there in command line.
Code:#man cdThat will not do anything. That is why it does not work.So I just Renamed the file and removed all the subfolders after root so the tar file is in the root folder (a shortcut to cut and paste? ).
Step one download file, save in appropriate directory, then:I untar'ed as you described.
Then read make file or readme info on how to proceed.Code:# tar jxvf file.tar.bz2
Then execute said procedures.
The make file or installer will normally do this for you.But now where do I put the extracted files? I can't find root/lib.
to Find something in linux:
Code:#man findLeave the gui junk alone for now.h ttp://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3296/cantfindlibfolder.jpg
Look it is obvious that you have bitten off more than you can chew, but that doesn't mean that you cannot overcome.
The best thing for you to do would be to get yourself comfortable with the command line and how to use it.
99% of the tools in back track use the command line.
If all you wanna do is look at pr0n and listen to music then it would be best to stick with windows. On the other hand if you wanna learn "pentesting" then you better start reading.
If you get stuck after doing some research post back

i have the same problem with the zd1211 ..i must say i am now learning linux ..never use it before ..have good knwolege of windows/hardware but linux "nothing" ..
p.s. sorry for my english
now let's begin
i have a TP-link zydas 1211 usb wifi
in backtrack4 beta it's working ..recognized with iwconfig ifconfig airmon-ng ..but no injection .... after reading the forums ...i've found out that zydas injection it's not working in bt4 ...the only way is with SpoonWEP (witch is not compatible with bt4...but comes with bt3)
so i've installed BT3 Final with vmware workstation .... now the driver it's not recognized by BT3.. downloaded firmware1.4 from hxxp://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=129083&package_id=187875
NOW COMES THE BAD PART
extracted the tar.gz file with winrar in windows until i had the zd1211 folder with 18 files ( including a readme file..witch says .."This distribution contains the firmware files for the
ZD1211 chip, which is used in WLAN USB sticks. Copy the zd1211_* files to
/lib/firmware/zd1211, where they can be loaded by the rewritten
zd1211 driver."
i've copied the files in /lib/firmware/zd1211 via GUI (still learning command lines)
unpluged the usb... plug-it back in and nothing
tryed with the version "ZD1211LnxDrv_2_22_0_0" ... untar + make still nothing
if i try lsusb i get
bus 1 device 7: id 0ace:1215 ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi
ifconfig shows me only lo
ifconfig eth0 up ..is working but its the ethernet network card not the wireless one
please someone can write the steps on how to make the driver working?
this is my first linux related post... i am learning ..i will learn more ...i started reading (been playing with linux for 3 days now) but i really want to make this usb wifi to work !
on my laptop i have a wifi 5100 link ...witch have other problems ... cant use vmware...injection not working well yet ...that's why i've buyed zd1211 (10euro) ..but still bad luck...please help
