Backtrack 4 : How can I integrate Realtek rtl8191su/rtl8192su in it ???

Hi,

I have a USB Wifi Antenna that includes a Realtek chipset rtl8191su (compatible with rtl8192su).
Unfortunately, the driver isn't included in BackTrack 4 even if this is a good widely spread chipset :

Single-Chip IEEE 802.11b/g/n 1T2R WLAN Controller with USB 2.0 Interface :Realtek

The Vista driver from Realtek website works perfectly.
The Realtek website doesn't offer any linux driver.

However, this driver is available on 2 websites :

The first one comes from Linux Headquarters - Kernel :

I would prefer to run Backtrack 4 from a live cd.

One, you will never re-compile the kernel nor compile a new kernel from the LiveCD. You can re-compile or compile a new one from an installed copy or if you are testing, from a vmimage.

First have you tried the ndiswrapper approach? Granted if you want to continue to use the Live CD approach, changes will be lost but..

Second, have you tried this:
rtl8192su_linux_2.6.0002.0708.2009.tar.gz - , Realtek, RTL8191S, RTL8191SU, Linux, drivers, for, Xtreamer, WLAN, USB, Dongle, antenna,

Upon examining the tarball, there is a nice little readme in there that should help you get going.

Lastly, If you've never compile a kernel before, I would warn you against doing so because it is a complicated process. A VERY general starting point would be here: Master Kernel Thread - Ubuntu Forums

This applies to compiling the 2.6.32 kernel. If you search the forums you will see the problems involved with things no longer working etc. so it is frowned upon. If your box becomes unuseable after doing a re-compile, you'll likely receive little or no help.

I haven't tried to compile anything yet. Yes, your link is the same driver as my second link.

Since Backtrack 4 is based on new kernel 2.6.30.9, will I have some difficulties to rebuild a new kernel?
Ok, so from my understanding, I should better install Vmware + the Backtrack 4 final VMWare image and then try to build a new kernel, right?

The 2.6.30.9 source is under /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.30.9 and yes, I would suggest installing a vm app and playing with the vmware image. I have one machine dedicated to nothing but compiling tools, kernel, testing things and sevral machines with VMWare Workstation where I can compile things there to test quickly.

Be forewarned, it is an extremely long process to re-compile depending on your proc speed and further, that's about all the info I'll give on messing with the kernel as it doesn't really pertain to BT4 in general and there is tons of info on the net on re-compiling and adding functionality for other drivers.

It will be good to include the chipset in backtrack5 even though we can't use it to hack...
