If only Id found this thread a few weeks back - I ended up doing this on my own, and it took me a while longer than it would have done if Id just followed your instructions. Good learning experience though
I performed many of the same steps as you did (install kdm, allow root logins, etc) but I didnt need to make any changes to /etc/event.d/rc-default to allow a GUI logon.
In addition, for those who have problems with KDE after performing an apt-get update, the following post from the BackTrack 4 blog provides a fix that worked for me.
