Default Cant connect to wireless network without using dhcp client?

NetworkManage and wlassistant both refuse to connect to a wireless network if i've manually defined IP settings. wlassistant gives me a "connection failed" right off the bat without even trying to associate, and Networkmanager doesnt even try to connect... am i doing something wrong here? Thanks
