Got same problem.
When i'm installing my bt4 on external drive it's in dev as /dev/sda{1,2,3},
but after reboot - same external drive is at /dev/sdb{1,2,3},
and its make that kernel panic.
U need to know your drive name after reboot, and make it same when lunching lilo.
It solve the problem ;-) (in most cases)
My question: how to change /dev/sda to /dev/sdb during system running?

Edit: I've google it, and found a solution for my problem:

but this not solving all problem, when U R using ssd :-/
