i faced a similar problem when i used a Vmware version of redhat4....thankfully with some common sense i overcame that because i new the password and user name has to be on the screen.....

since given that you downloaded from authentic sources and checked the MD5 this thing shouldnt happen ....

First of all, Sorry to revive this old thread.

I'm using the BT4 Pre-Release, it MD5's exactly the same.

I'm using Virtual PC (VMWare re badged by Microsoft). If i use the live distro its fine because it automatically logs me in as root. But once installing after using the install.sh script in KDE and reboot into the installed environment, i can log in using my account but root is no go!

Im not new to Linux or anything like that, but i do not understand why root/toor is not working.

Ive tried loads of other combination's with no joy. Anyone got ANY ideas as to whats going on? Reinstalled twice, same deal. Fresh Virtual hard drive image every time.

same here, downloaded, checked it, livecd boot, and install
my "new user" working, but can su too root
Not a typo, all in correct fields and so on.
root/toor just isnt working =)

This problem has been discussed ad nauseum, as such a quick search here google or ubuntu forums will reveal the answers.

I had this problem also... the default settings don't work (root / toor).

However after install if you login with the user you created and then run:

sudo passwd root

Enter the normal user password followed by the password you want to set for root then logout and you can log back in as root with the password you have entered.

If you install backtrack to a drive toor isn't the default root password. There is no root password on the install.
