Backtrack is open source, so I guess GPL would be the license as you already mentioned.
Why do you need to know? Just being curious![]()
Does anyone know what kind of license BT4 has?
I know that BT4 is based on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is GPL, so would it be fair to assume that BT4 is also GPL?

Ubuntu is GPL afaik, but how about the tools included in BT?
I can assume some being BSD licensed, some GPL, and maybe some even closed source? SAINT is a commercial application, right?
SAINT is a commercial application indeed.
SAINT
SAINT has provided BackTrack users with a functional version of SAINT, pending a free request for an IP range license through the SAINT website, valid for 1 year.
The same goes for Maltego btw.
Maltego
The guys over at Paterva have created a special version of Maltego v2.0 with a community license especially for BackTrack users. We would like to thank Paterva for co-operating with us and allowing us to feature this amazing tool in BackTrack.
I don't know what this means for the license though![]()
There are far too many tools and applications in BT to say "BT is BSD" or "BT is GPL". Each tool can have it's own license, and as far as I know, everyone and his uncle's dog are using it for all kinds of purposes, with the kindness of Offensive Security not requesting appreciation.
So, best answer would be check each different tool's license and you'll see the big picture.
I would say the OS its self is GPL but with all the included tools they have their own licensing. Wiki describes this as Various.

A better idea than reading through all of the speculative posts would be to contact the dev's and ask them.
