use fixvmware
then use startx
I booted the VM version of Backtrack 4 beta and tried the crystal-interface first. Fine.
After that (x-restart and reboot as well) I tried to start the KDE with "startx" but i comes up crystal again.
How do I fix this?
use fixvmware
then use startx
try modifying your /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to /usr/bin/kdm
There is already this entry in the file.
How creepy is this?
Perhaps any kind of "config"-data in my home directory due to the order starting the crystal manager first.
Try from the command line: update-alternatives --config x-window-manger
Is it possible that there is no kdm installed.
Currently I am installing kdm with
apt-get install kdm
I could be mistaken but this seems like kde (which I am running right now):
Code:which kwin /usr/kde3/bin/kwin
Ok - did not solve it - but - extracted the whole vmware packet again, this time starting the window manager with "startx" and it worked. KDE is coming up.
But - if a user starts with crystal and then tries to start the kde it will fail. I don't know why and what happens in the background but this is how it behaves.
WORKS:
(First time boot up)
startx -> starts KDE
DOS NOT WORK:
(First time boot up)
bt4-crystal -> starts Crystal WM
startx -> starts Crystal WM
fixvmware
startx -> starts Crystal WM
... every other hint ...
startx -> starts Crystal WM
there is a .xinitrc file in your home folder. Delete it. Startx
