    i recently became curious about obtaining email passwords via ettercap.
    would i need to be on the same network as the target?

    It might be beneficial for you to start with grasping how ARP spoofing works and how Ettercap actually manages to do what it does. But generally speaking the answer to your question is yes.

    You should be in the same layer2 domain like the 2 mac addresses you want to spoof :-)
    Normally it's the victim and the default gateway. Sometimes it can be two router interfaces.............

    so i learned alot today. hopefully if i keep up the pace i could get an IT job somewhere. network security is something that interests me specifically. thx
