    Default trouble with john

    when i enter the command

    john shadow2 --wordlist=/mnt/sda1/file1

    (shadow2 being the hash file)
    i get the reply:

    Loaded 4 password hashes with 4 different salts (FreeDSD MD5 [32/32] )
Crash recovery file is locked: /usr/local/john/john.rec

what can i do to resolve this issue?
    thank you for your time.

well sounds like you don't have permissions to the file for some reason. The john.rec file is simply for resuming a john session so i would delete it and also the john.pot file and try again. Remember if these files exist with a hash in it john will apear not to load the hash again.

thank you, that solved that problem but now i have a new one

    bt ~ # john /root/shadow2 --wordlist=/mnt/sda1/file1
Loaded 4 password hashes with 4 different salts (FreeBSD MD5 [32/32])
    guesses: 0 time: 0:00:00:39 100% c/s: 533 trying: zzzzzzzz

why does it say guesses 0?? also, i am nearly positive the password is contained in file1, why wouldn't it give me any results?

How big is wordlist? Is it larger than the amount of RAM you have?

it is quite possible that it is larger than my RAM, should i use a smaller wordlist, or is there a way around this problem?
