proxy setting error

i use a pxoxy to connect to the internet.
i can access the internet using the browser.
however, i am unable to ping google.com or any other site for that matter.
i tried setting the environment variable , HTTP_PROXY
but that does not help

what do i do?

Well you could ask either your proxy admin if he would enable you to ping something. Or you could have to use a tunnel.

Not sure the ping will go through the proxy?

If you can access the internet what proxy error are you referring to?

ICMP traffic may be blocked at a firewall?
