Thank You Godcronos. Like you, I tried many times to install the tools with auto start. After trolling the net for days I finally found the great tut that was very easy to follow and worked perfectly. As soon as I got it installed I let out a cheer and had to share my find with the community. Unfortunately I was not aware that my old pcmcia wifi card will not function in this environment and will be looking for a suitable usb adapter instead.

Im recieving this error at step 12
    vmware-config-tools.pl
unable to create symlink "/usr/sbin/vmware-checkvm" pointing to file "/usr/lib/vmware-tools/sbin32/vmware-checkvm".
Sometimes I try to fit a 16-character string into an 8–byte space, on purpose.

Well... not to revive a dead thread, but Google and forum search were my friends and they led me to this lone little post. I too followed this guide and it dumped me with the same problem -- all 8 times I followed the guide.

    What are we missing here?

After installing vmware tools successfully when i hit the command to config the vmware-tools.pl i get this:

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [usr/src/linux/include]
    (i hit enter then...)

The patch "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory
