OK well it doesn't work directly out of Backtrack 3. OK, well, thought that would be my luck. However there is a driver on the realtek website for the 8185L chipset. However it is a .tar.gz file, which I assume you have to decompress and like compile or assemble the code or something similar...

Where would I look for a guide or something similar to do this?

Use the following command to decompress your file:
    Code:
    tar zxvf yourfile.tar.gz
The driver will most likely come with a readme file which should tell you how to install it.

OK, easy enough, got some files, one is a readme, should be simple

    < Installation >
Running the scripts can finish all operations of building up modules from source code and start the nic:

(1)Build up the driver from the source code
    ./makedrv

(2)Load the driver module to kernel and start up nic
    ./wlan0up
(if "insmod: error inserting 'r8180.ko': -File exists." met,
    ./wlan0rmv
    ./wlan0down
    ./wlan0up
    should be OK.
    )
(3)Refer to < Set wireless lan MIBs > to set Wireless LAN specific parameters.

So I open terminal, go to my folder, which is on my desktop, type in "./makedrv"

    Code:
    john@john-desktop:~/Desktop/rtl8185_linux_26.1027.0823.2007$ ./makedrv
    ./ieee80211/

So I do like what it says in the readme, ./wlan0rmv

O wait, there is no ./wlan0rmv in the folder? So I don't know what I am supposed to do about that...

I try then doing all combinations of wlan0up, wlan0down, and makedrv but nothing works...

I know I am doing something wrong and it is probably a easy tweak to get it up and running but I don't know what to do

I spent couple of weeks trying rtl8185 to work on several different linuxes. And the only option that worked for me was ndiswrapper with winxp drivers. Unfortunately ndiswrapper doesn't support monitor mode.
If you just want to browse the web etc. then:
    # ndiswrapper -i /path/to/winxp-driver.ini
    # modprobe ndiswrapper
and it should work. Well, it worked for me on debian etch and bt3.
But if you want to crack WEP etc. then this chipset is useless as far as I know. I hope someone will eventually manage to install those nasty linux drivers properly and share this information with rest of the world

    I had the same problem.
But you can safely ignore it.
    ./makedrv
    ./wlan0down
    ./wlan0up

    iwconfig
    to see if it worked...
Mine showed the new wlan0 interface and I got it to work with monitor and injection mode with the aircrack-ng suite...

I hope this will help anyone googling this stupid problem like I did and not finding anything useful.

    Default Stupid error

I got the same problem when I was working with BackTrack 3 final and a Realtek RTL8185 chipset.
You can jump the step including ./wlan0rmv... after
    ./makedrv

    just type
    ./wlan0down
    ./wlan0up

    iwconfig
to show that it worked: mine showed the wlan0 new interface and I got it to work afterwards in monitor and injection mode with the aircrack-ng suite.

I hope this will help someone googling this stupid error and not finding anything useful (like I did)...

    anty
