Default Can't make my wifi card to work

    Hi there

I am on my way to hollyday and want to play whit backtrack. I am new to backtrack and to linux. I hope to find books on my hollyday in France to read about linux.

I make this and then I get an error:

    bt ~ # modprobe iwl4965
    bt ~ # modprobe ipwraw
    bt ~ # iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

    bt ~ # airmon-ng start wlan0

ERROR: Neither the sysfs interface links nor the iw command is available.
Please download and install iw from dl.aircrack-ng.org/iw.tar.bz2

I have downloaded this file and how do I install this file?
I can see that it contains c++ code, but how do I compile this and in what folder do I do it?

    Thanks
    Nedad

PS. What books do you recommend for Linux?

    Hi & welcome Nedad,

before you get started you should do some homework.
Use the search button and have a look at the numerous tutorials available in the "HowTo" section.
Some of your commands are wrong rather don't make sense.

There is no need to load both modules, but that is what you do.
You load the iwl4965 and ipwraw. One of them has to get disabled with the "-r" parameter. Depends of what you want to do which one has to be loaded.
    (iwl4965 = managed mode / ipwraw = monitor mode)

You say your wireless card isn't running, but look at your own post:
    Code:
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=27 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thr=2346 B
    Encryption keyff
    Power Managementff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
What's your problem, your card is running fine!

You are stopping your card with "ifconfig wlan0 down" but never bring it up again. To do so: "ifconfig wlan0 up"

Thats all for now, because how I said first , plz do your homework before playing arround.
Backtrack isn't a linux distro to get started, it needs some experience.

Be sensitive in choosing where you ask your question. You are likely to be ignored, or written off as a loser, if you:

    * post your question to a forum where it's off topic
    * post a very elementary question to a forum where advanced technical questions are expected, or vice-versa
    * cross-post to too many different newsgroups
    * post a personal e-mail to somebody who is neither an acquaintance of yours nor personally responsible for solving your problem

    Default More info

    Hi Greez

I am trying to follow this tutorial:
    thew0rd.com/2008/08/19/tutorial-cracking-wep-using-backtrack-3/

And I am rally fast runing into problems:

    bt ~ # modprobe -r iwl4965
    bt ~ # modprobe ipwraw
    bt ~ # iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    bt ~ #

After the "modprobr -r iwl4965" cmd I can't see my wifi card longer. It's the same when I try other tutorials, after that command I can't see my wifi card longer and I don't know what to do next.

    Best reg.
