Default A bootable usb image of a bt3 usb key with changes...

    Hi all.

I have been working hard to bring some help back to the forum and to hopefully reduce the repeated questions asked by newbies like myself.

Over the last couple of months on and off i have been creating a downloadable image to restore to a usb key with BT3 and the scripts to make wep and wpa cracking as easy as possible... This also includes saved changes and has been aided by the tutorials and help from baldparrot and pureh@te.

Currently I have tested with the following drivers:-

Intel IPW3945 ABC - Found in Dell D430 laptops
    Edimax 3918USG USB Dongle (RT73)

What i need now is some more experienced members to help me test my work and give me any feedback before i release the image and instructions on remote exploit and my blog.

The idea to to help get BT3 newbies get started and then help them learn how it all works by looking through the scripts etc.

Any questions, moans, groans and ideas can be left below and I hope that this can be seen as a positive post to the forum.

Tiptoe, thanks for the contribution/idea/etc. The only issue I see with this is that you are going to want to contact the rest of the dev team and ask their permission to "release" your image. Aside from that, the only question I have for you is, and this isn't a flame so take it for what it is, how much easier can it get for people? This isn't a distro designed for beginners, by any means, and while I appreciate both your work and the general desire to learn, the last thing I, and I'm sure my fellow seniors/mods/etc will aggree, is to turn this into a point and click h4x0r distro O' Do0m.... Their is a very big element of sophistication and complexity involved with Back|Track, and rightfully so. It was made by pentesters, for pentesters.

Consider what I've said and give us your thoughts. Again, this isn't about starting a flame war, I just want you to understand where some of us are going to come from with your contribution....

Tiptoe, Thank you for the PM. I will respond here though so we can address the topic so every one understands.
First of all I'm excited that you are passionate about giving back to the community and I am in no way trying to discourage that however you idea has a few problems.
    1) Your "image" of back track is not official and has not been approved by anyone on the team.
    2) Nothing against you but its asking a lot of people to trust your image has not been tampered with.
    3) If there is a issue with your release who will support all the questions and problems you receive. We here could not support a release we had nothing to do with.
    4) We have had this situation before on the forums. A member (whom we knew fairly well) had remastered the bt2 iso with some newer drivers and such. He posted it and we as a group (mods/admins/dev team) all decided that it was not something we wanted to get involved in.

So..... What does this mean. Well it means I will have to ask you not to post such a item on the forums. If you make it and post it on your blog and tell all your friends, well theres nothing we can do about that. BT is free to modify in anyway however we as a community can not officially support your release. I' hoping you will understand these points and please fell free to PM if you need some further clarification on the matter.

We had this type of situation another time when the community wanted to make a .lzm repository of stuff the community made and uploaded. We decided against that to because frankly unless I know you I'm not using your .lzm.

Ok fellas, thanks for your comments.

i understand where you are both coming from and will respect your wishes in not posting anymore on this subject on the forum.

The pure reason i have spent all the time was because the hard part i did find on here was trying to nail down the correct info for each part of my experience with bt3 within these forums. i know there are tons of posts and with these posts i eventually managed to scrape together a build that worked (This took weeks not days) Now my build involves next to no commandline, a few instructions and drag and drop.

i know people can be lazy when they just want to get it up and running yesterday, post repeated questions and don't bother to look for the info. On the flip side when you genuinely cannot find the details and you do post, it can be met with some angry replies or you just get ignored. The main concept of this release is to address those who are not professionals in linux or pentesting, but still want to try it out - These newbies will never go away so I saw a way to take some of the repeated, bloated posts away from the forum. Sometimes learning can be had by tinkering with the working build you already have, not just the original way of building it yourself.

The main reason i did not post a release of any sort was because i wanted to ensure i had the correct people involved and to seek their approval / sign off. it would have been more help if we had gone through what i had done before simply dismissing it. i guess that comes down to your time and the worry to what my scripts will do, but you guys are the professionals here and the likes of shamanvirtuel etc have posted sucessfully with your support. I wanted you guys to check all the code / scripts and try it before anyone got to see it!

Regarding support, there isn't much difference to this then there is on the BT3 final, any parts i found did cause an issue i posted about in my draft blog or instructions. i must admit i was dubious about how you guys would react so i'm not that surprised, but as a mature 35 year old, i.T specialist i don't see it as a flamed post

The release will not be posted here if the seniors like yourself pureh@te are not happy to check it out, although I would appreciate it as a fellow member that if i am to post on my blog i will not be blacklisted on the remote exploit forums ...

My post was not a flame and once again I will say that I appreciate the enthusiasm to help out. I will not blacklist you for posting on the blog however you should be sure to add that it is not a official remote exploit release. You may of course appeal to one of the developers if you want however I'm fairly certain we would share the same opinion on this.

I was talking about the other guy!

To be honest it all sounds a bit 'keep it in the family' but i will do my own thing anyway.

    Thanks for clearing this up.

That "other guy" would be me. I wasn't flaming you Tiptoe, I simply stated what Pureh@te posted in less illustrious terms. I am actually very proud of you for wanting to contribute to this community, as the majority here are takers and give very little back. Of course you are free to post up your image outside of RE, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that as it is an open distro; I just don't want you to get backlash from potentially labeling it as a RE release. Trust me, and I know that's a hard thing to do over the intertubes, but I had your best interests in mind with my initial post, and still do. I for one would like to see your image and test it out for you, but make sure it's done the right way.

Ok let me make myself crystal clear here! Both you guys pureh@te and shadowkill have been both honest and professional. I am happy that you both answered my post and it was indeed constructive and you did not upset me in any way.

If anyone of you guys can assist me on my mission then great, if not then i will take the risk on my blog purely as i feel i have invested a huge amount of time in a position to aid the new guys on the circuit. All help, advice, guidance and crticism is accepted as that is how we all learn and build our status upgrades from the junior to the senior on whatever forum, website or blog we are a apart of.

To save the forum diskspace and flack from fellow member i would like to ask this topic is locked now and all chat is carried out over PM, email or msn.

    Thanks

    Tiptoe
