after reading through the wiki i discovered the "cheat codes" section and saw the bt acpi=off boot parameter. where exactly do i enter this parameter? i tried at the initial menu for bt when it says press tab for options etc. and still got the black screen :/

You can place boot parameters in your syslinux.cfg file.

While booting you will get lilo boot loader menu.suppose there is backtrack entry by name

    backtrack

then in front of boot type
boot backtrack bt acpi=off and press enter
    it should work perfactly.

He said he's running it off of the DVD, not an install.
