I had been thinking my fan had just gone bad in my laptop, but figured I should do one last google attempt before opening it up to replace the fan. I found there was a bug in 8.10 ubuntu that was causing some computers to not access i8k properly to trigger the fan. Pretty much the second I finished the commands below my fans kicked on full charge.
Where I found the fix:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...id/+bug/160291
the fix for it was:
Hope this helps someone else and I hope I didnt post this one in the wrong area again as I am sure this is just a beginners fix.Code:echo i8k >> /etc/modules echo options i8k force=1 >> /etc/modprobe.d/i8k.modprobe

thou shalt treat all computers as thou wouldst treat thyself, for thou art the creator of thine own problems.
Great Job! We need more people like you around here.
How long were you running with no fan?

A few days but it was only on a few hours at a shot. I have been having it sit on one of those cooling mats. I know it was bad to not look at right away but its not my main laptop and well I have a few others just sitting around. Gotta love dumpster diving,
Now to attempt to patch the kernel with 3 seperate patches for some errors I have been getting and see if I can solve those, Which I think will also get rid of an x-server error I have anyways thats another thread when I can post all the info properly
Can anyone else confirm that their fans do not work?
If this is the case we can move this to the fixes section.
Also OP make sure you take a look at this link before you go messing with your kernel.
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...m-up-date.html Especially the post from mut's.
Thanks for the link about the Kernels I have gone through that one and tons others already. The only reason I wanted to try and see if these fixes work is because they are kernel errors that seems to have only happened with the 8.10, I can post all the errors if you would like they are mostly video errors that I am getting. I have seen 4 seperate patches that are suppose to fix the video errors. Just figured if I could post the fixes at the same time as the errors would save people the troubles. If you would like to me to post them I can make a new post in bugs if thats appropriate.
Also the fan issue according to the bug reports for ubuntu state the fan issue is mostly common in unsupported models in i8k.
