backtrack 3 hangs on boot on my mates advent laptop

it either hangs on serial or on no plug and play device found.

I had Some trouble with backtrack hanging on startup i edited the start line with acpi=off .
APPEND vga=0x317 changes=/dev/sda2 initrd=/boot/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 rw changes=/changes/slaxsave.dat autoexec=xconf;kdm acpi=off

This was to do with my Graphics been Microshafts Vista Only hardware
