Ok im running backtrack 2 from the hdd and i cant figure out for the life of me how to install rtl8187b-modified.tar.gz or rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007.tar.gz.
i am basically a complete noob ive been trying to figure this out 4 4days.
i need a complete tut or where do i extract them and what scripts in them do i run.
If you need to know my laptop is a gateway T-1616 with 2 gigs of ram.
PS I need to use monitor mode so i cant use ndiswrapper.

dustin343, those are compressed files (.tar.gz). My suggestion is to extract them, and see if maybe they come with a README or INSTALL file that you can follow. Also, secure_it is right. Try searching for "rtl8187b-modified.tar.gz". I just did a search for that and found the answer to your question...

Your best bet is to start learning Linux and Linux specific commands before trying to start with pentesting directly.
These are really basic things so I assume that you are not really that experienced with Linux.
So my recommendation is to getting known to the basics like finding your way around with the console, how to compile applications from source and so on, before really getting deeper into all the stuff.

thank you guys i havent got it working yet but i know a 1 maybe 2 people who know linux so i will ask them.
Did you try a search, like secure_it and syph0n suggested? If so, what did you find?
Did you extract the tgz's to see what you could find inside them? If so, what did you find?
