Directory help..

Yeah, this should be a really quick question.

Ok, so when your trying to aircrack a wpa handshake with a wordlist, for example, how can you crack them if they're not in the root directory? My wordlist is just way too big to go to /root (if I'm correct, /root is the system ram?)

I am running off of the USB version of BT3. Both the wordlist (called hatelist.txt, I bet you know where that's from) and the psk2-02.cap file are in a folder called: media:/sda3/Backtrack3stuff

I tried using the CD command, but it appears to be a little different in Linux. Help?

Specify the entire file system path to the wordlist.

My wordlist is just way too big to go to /root (if I'm correct, /root is the system ram?)

If you're booting from a LiveUSB stick /root may be in RAM but does not represent RAM. If it's a full USB install then any directory would be bound by the capacity of the USB device (likely just a few GB).

CD = Change directory, what are you trying to compare it to (DOS?) and how do you feel it differs?

DOS (Winders CLI) isn't case sensitive and uses the \ instead of the / and you can ram the \ right up against the command.

Looking at it from a purely newb aspect, it's very different.

Add /mnt/ to the locations.

Hrm.. I do believe it's working, but I get another error:

It says the .txt wordlist is unsupported? I don't have it in the wrong place, do I?

No it's saying your capture file is wrong.

This is really frusterating.

So, I got a handshake again.. Then I type all this out:

aircrack-ng -w /mnt/sda3/bt3/hatelist.txt -b (AP's mac) linksys-01.cap
Empty dictionnary
Empty dictionnary
Opening linksys-01.cap
Please specify a dictionary (option -w).

Not working.
After searching youtube and crap on how other people crack it, I found this:

aircrack-ng -0 -x2 -w /mnt/sdb/hatelist.txt linksys-01.cap

That does work, but not really.. It says current passphrase: (blank), nothing appears there. I also have the hatelist.txt on one of my harddrives:

aircrack-ng -0 -x2 -w /mnt/sda3/bt3/hatelist.txt linksys-01.cap

But that dosn't work for some reason. I really am not getting this.. raaawrrr

Please check that the dictionary is not actually empty using for example the cat command. Last time I saw a problem like this posted on the forum it turned out to be exactly what the error message claimed it to be, an empty dictionary. If the wordlist does turn out to be anything but empty, you could always try creating a small wordlist of your own and check if the above process works using it, since I have seen this same error when using to large an wordlist as well.
