okay guys so my wifi card is recongnized by backtrack. so when i edit wpa_wupplicant.conf it connects, i tell this by doing iwconfig. then i try to get online but doesnt work...

edit: solved connecting problem forgot to dhcpcd

but now do i always have to do this process? (run wpa_supplicant)

As far as I know the answer is yes. However, you can naturally write a simple bash script to speed up the process. Also, in case you don't mind the often unreliable connection and other bugs that comes with the program you can use Wireless Assistant to connect to your AP.

i have tried this but it doesnt seem to like to connect to anything

Instead of dhcpcd <interface>, try dhclient <interface>.
