    Default BackTrack3 Slow lilo boot on hdd install <trick>

    Hi
    i think many users use HDD install from bt3 and use lilo and wondering why the booting is soo slow whit .................... bios ...

    simple trick and its not in the howto about install bt3 on hdd .

    first open /etc/lilo.conf
    Code:
    nano -w /etc/lilo.conf
    The <Trick> my lilo.conf looks like :

    lba32
    boot=/dev/hda
    prompt
    timeout=60
    default=BackTrack
    compact     ##### thats the <trick>
    
    change-rules
    reset
    vga=791
    
    image=/boot/vmlinuz
    root=/dev/hda3
    label=BackTrack
    initrd=/boot/splash.initrd
    
    other=/dev/hda1
    label=WinXP
    After this running lilo -v and reboot and smile

    You just need to type this as root:

    lilo -c -v

    You all do realize that "tricks" like the compact option always come at a price or trade off somewhere. The more intelligent thing to do would be to turn off all the services at boot you dont need and rebuild the kernel to only include the things you need. My gentoo laptop boots in 15 seconds and thats with modules and services.

    Very true. Or one could use flux or no gui at all. This would aid in start up.


    And as for your gentoo boot don't rub it in. I believe I get around 30 seconds.

    As I posted in the other duplicate version of this thread this trick, although it does make lilo read the HD faster, may cause some computers with older hardware to hang.
