    Ill be happy to try and help but you will have to provide me with any errors you had and at what point the happened. Sounds most likely you didn't chroot properly before installing the bootloader LILO.

    I am thinking the same thing. Because I noticed that after I chroot this
    bt~# changes to bt/#. See where it changes from ~ to /. I am not sure what I could be doing wrong that it is causing that. I saw that when you used the chroot command yours didnt change. Thanks!

    bt ~ # chroot /mnt/backtrack/ /bin/bash
    bt / # nano /etc/lilo.conf
    bt / # nano /etc/lilo.conf
    bt / # lilo -v

    Value expected for 'boot' at or above line 2 in file '/etc/lilo.conf'

    Is it that my boot should be boot /dev/sda1?

    Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 7 56196 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 8 70 506047+ 82 Linux swap
    /dev/sda3 71 9726 77561820 83 Linux

    Lilo.conf

    lba32
    boot /dev/sda
    prompt
    timeout=60
    change-rules
    reset
    vga=791
    image = /boot/vmlinuz
    root = /dev/sda3

    Try it like that
    It worked!!! I also had to shorten the label name because it was too long. Thank you very much!!!!

    BTW I don't know if it's my computer but in the first page your lilo.conf looks like the one below without the = between boot /dev/sda

    lba32
    boot /dev/sda
    prompt
    timeout=60
    change-rules
    reset
    vga=791
    image = /boot/vmlinuz
    root = /dev/sda3
    label = backtrack3_final

    pureh@te, I have tried everything and then tried it again and it still doesn't work. I have made sure the lilo.conf is right as far as the directions you have given and i still get the kernel panic problem. I truly do not know what else the problem could be. I am a real novice at everything linux so any help is appreciated.
