Dr. green has mentioned how to upgrade BT3 kernel to 2.6.28 having common cutomized packegs already selected, not the whole backtrack 3.you still need old BT3 ISO in order to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.28.probably you are confused with backtrack 4 as it will be having 2.6.28 kernel.check out first page of post by dr.green.there is link to download it.

    thanks for the reply

to my understanding he got bt3 and updated it and patched it to 2.6.28 and some driver updates

these are the 2 files I see posted in his 1st post

Kernel crippled sources (needed for compiling drivers etc)...
    Filename: crippled-sources-linux-2.6.28-i486-1.lzm
    Size: 5.90 MB
    MD5: 188b788474d76f0af9a8eed950d2aa81
    SHA1: 12e69e1619c3e044268a05c470e0ac68ca312ee0

    Filename: bt3-kernel-cd-2.6.28.1.tgz
    Size: 56.00 MB
    MD5: ad77a287e7f7f8f9393208dfca727b6e
    SHA1: 4df1109dd4f8bf661d05cf0632b108809a672997

right now I have BT3 final running on my win xp laptop with 3945abg
    and the following guide neothermic.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=138

but I need the 2.6.28 kernel to make it run on my vista computer with 4965agn that was why I was looking for an iso that supports the 4965agn.

    im a newbye of BT3.
I've followed Mr green's suggestions on kernel 2.6.28 ,and made a good upgrade; just because my usb dongle netgear wg111v3 wasn't supported by BT3.
And now it's working out of the box. (i.e.packet injections, monitor mode): just plug and check with dmesg that cfg80211, mac80211 and rtl8187 modules have been inserted into the kernel.

Ps: mr green is now re-updating to kernel 2.6.28.1 and soon I will be ready to test it.

in order to put the interface into monitor mod, do you use airmon-ng stop/start wlan,
if yes do you get any error, does it change the mode quickly or you have to wait 15-20 sec, like me.

in addition to this my drivers showed wpa networks as wep,
do you get this kind problems with the mac80211 driver.

to put the device in monitor mode i found almost 3 different ways:
1)airmon-ng (after installed libnl and iw): there will be a wlan0 and a mon0 new device
    2) ifconfig wlan0 down / iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor / then simply airodump-np
    3) modify kismet.conf -> source=rt8180,wlan0,wg111v3 and then launching kismet

And yes, I wait some seconds before having prompted , for exaple, when typing ifconfig wlan0 up after committed iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor

With airodump-ng I'm sure to have showed WPA TSKP, WPA2, WEP or OPN (and other vaiants) mode in correct way, so that spoonwep2 ore spoonwpa works well

Only using wlanassistant it does not correctly shows wep/wpa, but all beacons as wpe.

still awaiting to test the new 2.6.28.1 from MrGreen
