If the passphrase is a bunch of numbers, can the dictionary work? I am asking this because all I can see is aircrack going through the dictionary from A to Z and not numbers.

A dictionary based attack will only work if the exact word or letter/number/character combination is found within it.

Yes, and more precisely you will have to use a dictionary with that exact number sequence in order for the WPA passphrase to be found.
