    Default startx

I configured xorg.conf for a big desktop using the ati propriety driver. When I log in as root and type startx, the gui boots up fine. When I am logged on as another user and type startx I get the following error:

    Fatal server error
Cannot move old log file ("/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old")
    giving up
xinit: No such file or directory
unable to connect to X server
xinit:No such process (erno3) server error

    any ideas ??

Your "other user" does not have write permissions to /var.
xinit isn't launching, perhaps it isn't in the PATH of your "other user"

Also, make sure you have the xserver's various launch scripts correctly set up to be used by use this other user.

I used the below commands to change the write access of /var already unfortunately, are these correct?

    chmod 777 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    chmod 777 /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

when you say "xserver's various launch scripts" which files do you mean sorry?
