It's not possible to get a handshake just with airodump is it?

what are your specs (ram and processor) ?

it's possible to get an handshake only with airodump , but you have to wait a client connects and at this time you should see in upper right corner of airodump : wpa handshake ......

the purpose of deauthing is only to speed up things.
