thats because bt2 uses VESA. Have you tried booting BT3 in VESA mode. Should be the same.
On my Dell Inspiron 1100 I found that even after xconf I was still getting the "no screens" error, I was confused because BackTrack2 worked perfectly.
Simple solution:
Run BT2, copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf to usb/HD
Run BT3 replace /etc/X11/xorg.conf with copy from BT2
Run startx
=JOY!
