Default find out what usb wireless dongle I have

    hello guyz,

I have searched this forum and on google but can't find the answer. maybe you can give some hints.

I have just received my usb wireless dongle, when I plug it in nothing happens.
Inserted the driver cd, but there are a lot of linux versions.

On my dongle there is no brand ? so I can't search for that.

How can I let this dongle work with backtrack installed on HDD.
Which commands can I give to troubleshoot?

    regards Durana

p.s in windows XP it works well.

After you insert it, what does the "lsusb" command return?

    What about "usbview"?

What does it tell you in Windows?

    hello perez,

    here is the output:
    bt ~ # lsusb
    Bus 2 Device 3: ID 1241:1155 Belkin
    Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000
Bus 1 Device 5: ID 160a:3184 < when I plug in the usb dongle, this one appears.
    Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000

    usbview comes with:
    vnt usb-802.11 wireless LAN Adapter
    manufacture: via networking tech, inc

ok now I know which manufacurer it is,
    - what is the chipset
    - how can I use this dongle instead of my laptop wireless
    - can I use this with backtrack injection etc..

    P.s on the usbdongle I see :VNT6656GUA00

    thanks Durana

I also found in the txt file linux.txt how to install, but I get stuck with the line 5,
how should I do that ??..

    3) untar the archive file: went OK

    tar xzvf vntwusb.tgz
    cd vntwusb

    5) Compile the source files and it will generate './driver/vntwusb.ko' and
'./ioctl/wetctl'. The file 'vntwusb.ko' will copy to driver installation
path and'wetctl' will copy to '/sbin/wetctl'.

    make clean
    make install

    ===================

    this what I did:

    bt vntwusb # make
set -e; for d in driver utility; do make -C $d ; done
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/vntwusb/driver'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/vntwusb/driver'
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/vntwusb/utility'
make[1]: `wetctl' is up to date.
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/vntwusb/utility'
    bt vntwusb # make install
set -e; for d in driver utility; do make -C $d install ; done
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/vntwusb/driver'
    mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.6.20-BT-PwnSauce-NOSMP/kernel/drivers/net
    install -m 644 -o root vntwusb.ko /lib/modules/2.6.20-BT-PwnSauce-NOSMP/kernel/drivers/net
install: cannot stat `vntwusb.ko': No such file or directory
    make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/vntwusb/driver'
    make: *** [install] Error 2
    bt vntwusb #

You have the make, model, and FCC ID. That is plenty to use with Google.

If it takes this much time to figure out what flavor USB you have..chances are its not gonna work with BT2. Don't waste any more time with it. Just go to the aircrack MAIN site and look at the supported cards/compatibality list..and buy one. I suggest the alfa 500mw. Heres the link to the aircrack main sites cards/ compatibility list...

    hello guyz,

finally received my alfa awus036s usb dongle.
I have inserted and restart my backtrackHDD installed. But it stops on boot by rausb0, and It doesn't do anything more.

    Should I do something first?

    thanks

Send your laptop back to the manufacturer?

Try booting without the adapter installed.
Of course, if you really wanted to have some fun, go to Wal-Mart late at night and ask the greeter if they could help you find trashbags, roll of carpet, rope, quicklime, clorox and a shovel. See if they give you any strange looks. --Streaker69
