Hey,
I have followed this tutorial http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...ad.php?t=43665
When i used grub 2 i could fix the "black screen" problem after startx, with adding startx to /root/.bash_profile
in combination with editing the line with "i915.modeset=1" after "text splash vga" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
After I downgraded to grub legacy, I have the "black screen" problem again
I can't edit the grub because there is no such line with "text splash vga".
Also it tells me some error with "i915" on the purple screen.
Please help![]()

If the problem is you can no longer edit the grub by pressing the tab button, press shift after bios then choose recovery mode.then scroll down to the boot as root (all i remember was the root) option.then enter the password.you will now boot normaly.now you can re-edit any grub file
Also, try the vga=0x315 solution for grub.it works fine for me.
