GPSD problems Garmin 265w

Hey all!

I apologize, but yes - I am yet ANOTHER person trying to get my GPS device working with GPSD without any luck. I have searched everywhere and just can't find the help I need. I am far from a linux expert, yet not a complete noob - I have a diploma as a Computer Programmer Analyst and have been using computers for decades. I have even used linux in the past to setup Apache/MySQL/PHP servers, so I do have some experience. Any help would be appreciated - I will try to give you all the information I have so far. I am beating my head against the wall at this point...

Let's start off with the hardware/software being used:

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE

I am using a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with dual CPU's. The GPS unit is a Garmin nuvi 265w.
I am booting the system using BackTrack 4 (first bootup option - Start BackTrack Frame Buffer (1024x768)) - So a clean install every time, I believe. GPSD is version 2.37 that came preinstalled with BT4.

THE GOAL

While playing with Slax I finally started playing with aircrack and found it quite amusing. I noticed an option to use it with GPSD and obviously became intrigued. It would be cool to track the open (and public) access points and put those points in my GPS. As far as I can tell I can do this with the proper hardware and possibly some other programs like Kismet, but obviously haven't gotten that far yet - As I am still stuck on getting it to work with GPSD. I have seen videos online of people who have marked AP's and browse them using a mapping system and would like to do this myself. Since I was having problems with aircrack in Slax, I downloaded BT4 and haven't had any problems with aircrack since. It has plenty of the programs I really want to use and decided to work with it instead. I'll likely get back to at a later time - It's so small!!!

THE PROBLEM

GPSD seems to run perfectly from what I can tell. I can get the daemon running and connect to it thru telnet on port 2947 without any diffuculties, however from there the device doesn't seem to communicate with the server in any way. I believe that either the device isn't meant to work this way or that I'm connecting to the wrong device some how (from what I understand NMEA is the protocol used). As I said, I'm not a linux expert and don't know the ins and outs of some of the finer points of this OS, so the solution is likely obviously in my face but I'm not seeing it. I've tried connecting gpsd to all kinds of devices and things that I probably shouldn't have just cause I am so lost on this part.

WHAT I HAVE DONE

Just as in Windows, when I connect the device to the USB, the device turns on, but not normally (by normally, I mean when I'm using it in my car and have access to the mapping system and all the other features) - Instead, it shows a picture I uploaded to the device with a little icon on it that demonstrates that I am connected to the PC. I cannot use the device at all at this point, which is normal for the device. It's simply allowing me to access the media inside so I can transfer files back and forth. I have noticed that sometimes, when the power is low and I charge it thru USB it will turn on 'normally' (as in being able to access the features) once the power is full while still plugged in as USB. If the power is already full and I plug it in with USB, I'm stuck with not being able to use the device any more except as a drive on my PC.

The GPS unit is fairly new and works great. It will connect in Windows and I can mount the drive in BT4. But that just allows me to access the FS in the device. Basically useless. But does show that the device connects to some degree. I can mount the device in BT4 with mount /dev/sdc /mnt/garmin and read the FS without any problems.

Alright, let's get to the heart of the matter - From the research I've done so far there are a few basic steps that I need to do to get a Garmin device working first.

After BT4 boots, I mount one of my hardrives (which I used for storing permanent stuff like my notes). And add a path to my scripts.
Then I enable my WIFI card using a script. After that, I install the module garmin_gps.

Apparently I should have /dev/tts/USB0 or /dev/ttyUSB0 - Neither of these exist in BT4, yet I can use my USB devices without any problems. So far I have used a wireless WIFI, and USB thumbdrives without any issues - So I know that USB is working.

Apparently I can create these /dev/ttyUSB? devices with mknod, so I do this after installing the garmin_gps module. From what I've read I may also need to chmod 777 these devices as well, so I do that after I create them. I'm not sure if I need to run the mknod commands before or after I connect the device. I generally do before I connec the device though.

Then I connect the Garmin GPS unit. From what I've read, I then need to mount it to /proc/bus/usb (no idea what the point of this is for, but it allows me to read from /proc/bus/usb/devices from this point on). From what I've read I'm suppose to do this after the device is connected.

Everything seems to go fine up until this point when I run GPSD.

garmin_gps uses usbserial - which I believe converts USB to a serial device? Anyways, so that's why I tried to connect using serial. Whether this is right or not, it did provide some other information - garmin_gps is NOT in /proc/bus/usb/devices???

I've seen this in other forums also, and in one - A guy posted his devices log and he DID have this in there...???

As you can see, there is no garmin_gps entry... I have no idea how to use this file or how to modify it safely (if you even can)... This is why I'm starting to wonder if I can even use this specific device this way...

Anyways, sorry for the length of this message, but I thought it would be best to be as specific as possible considering there is little information available. I'm sure I am missing a couple of points I've learned over the past few days - But this is basically where I'm at now. If you can shed ANY light on this whatsoever, I would really appreciate a response. There is very little about my particular device out there which is only making it harder. I have no idea if it is even capable of using NMEA.

At the very least, maybe someone will be able to read this thread in a couple of years and be able to make sense of some of it...

Will the garmin spit out straight nmea and not the Garmin protocol? You probably don't need the modprobe Garmin stuff if it can.

Once I find the driver and give that option a go - I'll let ya know if that worked...

Im also having issues with a Garmin GPS device.
I have tried the modprobe garmin_gps then adding the device, then mounting the /proc/bus/usb

but when i do dmesg | grep usb
i get:

Instead of the attached to /dev/ttyusb0 which is what is supposed to happen.

the Garmin drivers have been disabled i think in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
but having it commented out or not makes no difference to the issue.

Have you managed to get your Garmin on USB0 and working?
