Backtrack could use a package manager. Lucid uses gdebi (Gdebi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). What's stopping Backtrack of using something similar?

Yeah apparently you have been asleep for a while. BT which is based of Ubuntu/Debian. All of which use apt-get, aptitude, and synaptic for package management.

Ouch, moved to the beginners forum.
My mistake. I simply prefer gdebi to install .deb packages. It's a lot quicker/easier IMHO.
