Can someone Answer some beginner questions ?

Hello Backtrack forum ,

Im still pretty new to backtrack i have successfully tested my wep key and now i was wanting to test my wpa2 key but was having a few issues so could some one answer a few questions i have ?


Q. Im using Backtrack 3 atm but was thinking about going to Backtrack 4, Witch is better for beginners ?

Q. When i boot from the live CD i cant save anything at all like a word dictionary and screenshots, ect.
Is that normal ?

Q. If i make Backtrack boot from my USB drive will it act like a mini hard drive so i can save stuff in backtrack like a dictionary and screen shots ect.... ?

Q. Can anyone suggest a good, preferably free word dictionary for backtrack ?

Q. Can any one suggest a good wap2 key testing tutorial ?

Hello welcome to the forums..

First: Only Backtrack 4 is supported here so you are not going to get any help asking questions about backtrack 3

Its time to upgrade any way right??

Second: yes working with a live cd, that is normal behavoir. if you are looking for a writable system, look into installing on to a usb stick or onto a harddrive

Third: Yes you can make a writable usb stick

Fourth: there are a ton of wordlists out there to be found..... GOOGLE and you shall find.... All are free.. you should never have to pay for a wordlist.
you can make your own, and BT4 comes with a couple.. or search the forums several people have posted their worlists for download...

Fifth: as far as tutorials go you can look in the video section or the tutorial section...

just start reading the posts in the beginners forum until you can get a feel for what you are trying to do.

Everything that you have a question about (almost everything) can be answered by finding the information in these forums...

Update to BT4, it is better supported, has less bugs, and more tools. Besides, if you can use BT3 you should be able to use BT4.

Yes. To do this requires a persistent usb. See here: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...ad-thread.html which you should have read before posting these questions. A little of your own research goes a long way. And that answers your next question too.

There are some contained in the backtrack repositories, under Backtrack wordlists.

Aircrack-ng will serve all your needs, again, a little research beforehand would have found you this. You can find it here: Aircrack-ng It has all the necessary documentation to get you started, and finished.

To be frank, there are some differences between BT3 and BT4 that you should look into before making the switch, BT3 is very different in some aspects.

I did a dual-boot install of BT4 to HDD and have never looked back, its the best way to learn ; its there so you gotta deal with it

There are a lot of excellent tutorials here regarding WEP & WPA passkey cracking, so you should have no trouble in finding what you are looking for.

for beginners i am actually partial to BT3F, slackware will always have a special place in my heart, but also many of the tools in the distro are outdated or glitchy, requiring that you learn more about linux and compile many of the tools from source. however whichever BT version you choose will be personal preference.

Of coarse you may, because the aircrack-ng suite has nothing to do with the "wap" protocool.
