    Default I have some questions.

I am trying to figure out cracking server passwords with BackTrack 4, and have some questions. To access the server, you have to provide a username and password on an XP computer. When you input a correct username and password, you are mounted onto a hard drive assigned to your username on the server. When I boot from a flash drive, I cannot mount to the server, and therefore the server isn't local to BackTrack, just the computer. So how exactly do I make the server local to BackTrack? Would running BT4 in a VM on my account make the server local? Also, where do I go from here once I make the server local to BackTrack? Thanks in advance.

Well, that didnt make a whole lot of sense to me. Booting BackTrack from a flash drive will not prevent you from mounting a Windows volume. The problem is somewhere else.

And use more descriptive thread titles next time - its one of the forum rules.
Capitalisation is important. It's the difference between "Helping your brother Jack off a horse" and "Helping your brother jack off a horse".

Sorry about that. Also sorry about submitting two threads, didn't catch the redirect message the first time. Anyways, I don't quite understand how our network works. You can't access the server unless you log in. When you log in, you are mounted to the server. I couldn't mount to the server if I connected to our network from my laptop or if I booted from a different drive. I mean, I'm sure you could, but I don't know how. I don't quite understand where I would start. I see two plausible ways of doing this, and they are using a VM on my account while logged into the server, and booting from my flash drive. I don't know which is easier, or exactly where to go from either option.

He seems to be talking about logging into a domain, in the Microsoft sense of the word 'domain'. That is authorization and authentication is provided via a central server upon a correct login, and when that's complete, the user may also have additional access to a remote "home" share, as well as possibly other shared resources such as disk space and printers .

To answer the initial questions, you can't use BT in that manner, at least not directly. You may be able to use the smbclient.

As to the question, "where do I go from here once I make the server local to BackTrack?" The answer is that if you provide a standard user name, then you will have the same level of access as you would in logging on via Windows.

Nothing personal, but the fact that your even asking this question in this manner -as well as the rest of your questions-, is indicative that you probably do not understand the function of BT and its tools. You need to understand those things before you even attempt to use BT. Of course, that begs the question "Do you need to use BT?" Unless the answer to that question is "I am a information security specialist, and need a specialist's tools." then you don't need BT, any more that a bull needs tits.

Thorn, Clearly you have not heard that when you use Backtrack at a frat party and break a wep key you have to beat the girls off of you with a stick.

It would be too much to hope that you didn't futz around with things you don't understand. Seems like at the very least you're going to do something that scr**s your data if not something that scr**s your IT guys or entire company.

Huh? Who are "they" and how do you figure they're doing anything to your boot device that you don't know about.
I'm a compulsive post editor, you might wanna wait until my post has been online for 5-10 mins before quoting it as it will likely change.

I know I seem harsh in some of my replies. SORRY! But if you're doing something illegal or posting something that seems to be obvious BS I'm going to call you on it.
